Lesson 14

1. Today farming employs more people than any other types of work. 今天從事農業(yè)的人要多于從事任何其它工種的人。type n. 種類(lèi) type of 后面的名詞常常用單數。e.g. John is a type of schoolboy. 約翰是學(xué)生的一個(gè)典范。The engineer invented a new type of machine. 這位工程師發(fā)明了一種新型機器。types of后面的名詞可用復數，也可用單數，做主語(yǔ)時(shí)謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用復數形式。e.g. Several types of cars are on show in the exhibition. 好幾種新型汽車(chē)在展覽會(huì )上展出。 What types of crops are planted in this area? 這個(gè)地區種植什么農作物？

For one thing two thirds of the earth’s surface is water, although this does provide a lot of food in the form of fish. 首先，地球表面的三分之二是水，盡管這部分以魚(yú)的形式提供了許多食品。1). for one thing 表示“首先”，用來(lái)列舉理由，當需要繼續列舉時(shí)，可用for another表示“其次”。 e.g. Sorry I can’t go to the cinema with you this afternoon. For one thing, I have seen it; for another, I have an important meeting to attend. 對不起，下午我不能和你一塊兒去看電影。一則我已看過(guò)這部電影，再則我要去開(kāi)一個(gè)重要的會(huì )議。 I don’t want to buy the dictionary. For one thing, it is too expensive; for another, I don’t have enough money with me at present. 我不買(mǎi)這本字典。首先，它太貴了；其次，我現在也沒(méi)有足夠的錢(qián)。 2). in the form of 以形式；The sun gives us energy in the form of light and heat. 太陽(yáng)以光和熱的形式給予我們能量。The cakes are all in the form of stars. 這些蛋糕都是星星形狀的。

And this area is becoming smaller day by day. 面積在漸漸縮小。day by day一天天地；（有變化）day after day一天天地；（重復同一動(dòng)作）step by step逐步地；one by one 一個(gè)一個(gè)地；twos by twos 兩個(gè)兩個(gè)地；group by group 一批一批地；e.g. The boy is growing taller day by day. 那個(gè)男孩一天天長(cháng)高了。Day after day he does the same job. 日復一日，他做著(zhù)相同的工作。

4. That is why the Chinese people are making great efforts to protect their farmland and increase agricultural production. 這就是為什么中國人要下大力氣來(lái)保護耕地，增加農業(yè)生產(chǎn)的原因。effort (可數名詞.) 努力；努力的嘗試；make efforts = make an effort 做出努力；盡力；make every effort 盡一切努力；spare no effort 不遺余力

5. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) has worked out that up to 30% of food is lost in storage. 聯(lián)合國的糧食農業(yè)組織統計出多達30% 的糧食在儲存中損失掉了。1). up to “多達……”；e.g. Up to 40% of the water in our city has been polluted. 我們市多達40%的水已被污染了。 They have completed up to 85 percent of the project so far. 至今為止他們已經(jīng)完成了這項工程的百分之八十五。 “直到……”；e.g. The little baby can count from one up to one hundred. 那個(gè)嬰兒能夠從一數到一百。 “勝任……”；e.g. He is not up to his job. 他不勝任他的工作。 “視為……的職責”，這時(shí)通常用 be up

to sb. to do sth.這個(gè)句型。e.g. It is up to you to decide who should go first. 應該由你來(lái)決定誰(shuí)先走。2). work out估算出；算出；e.g. We worked out the cost and found that it was cheaper than the market price. 我們算出了費用，發(fā)現它比市場(chǎng)價(jià)格便宜。耗盡；用盡；The coal mine is now worked out. 那個(gè)煤礦已經(jīng)枯竭了。

6. In a word, hunger is a big problem in the world today. 總之，饑餓是當今世界的一大難題。in a word = in one word 總之；總而言之；e.g. My answer is, in a word, “No”. 總之，我的回答是“不”。in words用語(yǔ)言; I don’t want you to promise me in words that you will study hard. 我不要你們用語(yǔ)言來(lái)向我保證你們會(huì )努力學(xué)習。

7. …that is about one in ten. 也就是說(shuō)大約十個(gè)人中有一個(gè)吃不飽飯。one in ten = one out of ten 十分之一；e.g. The losses were nine in ten. 損失了十分之八九。Such a chance is one in a thousand. 這樣的機會(huì )是難得碰上的。

Take the Aswan Dam in Egypt for example, where desert land can now be used for growing crops. 以埃及的阿斯旺大壩為例，那兒的沙漠土地現在可用來(lái)種莊稼。take … for example = take … for instance; 以……為例 e.g. Take our school for example. 就以我們學(xué)校為例吧。Take Wang Shaohe for example, he is pride of our school. 就以王少鶴為例吧，他是我們學(xué)校的驕傲。

9. …and that are less likely to be attacked by pests and diseases. ……以及那些不易受病蟲(chóng)害影響的。likely adj. / adv. 像要的；有可能的；（做表語(yǔ)）有希望的；像是真的；（做定語(yǔ)）e.g. It is likely to rain. 天像要下雨了。He is likely to come. 他有可能會(huì )來(lái)。They are likely young men. 他們是有出息的好青年。 That is a likely story. 像真那么回事似的。He will most likely come. 他大概馬上就會(huì )來(lái)的。
