1.first與at first
兩者都可表示“首先”。first用來(lái)表示一系列動(dòng)作或事物的開(kāi)始，例如：First turn right，then turn left at the second turning.首先向右轉，然后在第二個(gè)轉彎處向左轉。first還可用于列舉，表示“第一”的序列關(guān)系。at first多暗示后來(lái)發(fā)生的事情或動(dòng)作與以前不同，甚至相反，意為“起初”，例如：At first he knew nobody, but now he has many good friends.開(kāi)始他誰(shuí)也不認識，但現在他有許多好朋友。
2.in front of與in the front of
in front of意思是“在……前面”，如：There is a tree in front of the house.房子前面有一棵樹(shù)。而in the front of意思是“在……前部”，如：There is a blackboard in the front of the classroom.教室里前部有一塊黑板。因此，in the front of是指在某個(gè)空間范圍內的前面。
3.lesson與class
這兩個(gè)詞都是名詞，lesson意思是“課，功課”，如：There are four lessons every morning.每天上午有四堂課。Lesson One第一課。class的意思比lesson廣泛一些，除了作“課”講以外，還作“班”講，如：no classes沒(méi)有課，in front of the class在全班同學(xué)前面。
4.find與find out
兩者都有“發(fā)現”的意思，但語(yǔ)義有差別。find有偶然發(fā)現某物的意味，如：He found a bag on the floor.他發(fā)現地板上有個(gè)書(shū)包。find out指經(jīng)過(guò)，探聽(tīng)，詢(xún)問(wèn)，調查之后的“發(fā)現”或“弄清楚”。如：Please find out who took my book by mistake.請查清楚誰(shuí)拿錯了我的書(shū)。
5.at night與in the night
這兩個(gè)短語(yǔ)同義，都作“在夜間”講，但at night是泛指的，相當于during any night的意思，而in the night則是特指的，相當于on a particular night的意思。試比較：We all go to sleep at night.到了晚上我們大家都去睡了。There was a full moon in the night.那天晚上明月當空。
